A Job Interview

Most college students go to college in order to be engineers, teachers or chemists. Before they can begin working, however, they must find a job. The first problem for them to meet with is the job interview. Even though they may be well qualified, getting the right job can be difficult if they are not prepared to deal with the job interview. Kim’s experience is a good example.

While in school, Kim worked hard to study his chosen subject, computer science. When a program did not work properly, Kim kept on trying until it did. He never hesitated to ask his professors about aspects of computer science that he did not understand. He even managed to work in the computer room on campus to get experience. All of his professors agreed that Kim was a well-qualified graduate.

A month before Kim graduated with a B.S. degree, his advisor encouraged him to sign up for an interview with a large company. The company needed someone to be a programming supervisor. Kim thought he would be good at doing that job.

A week before the interview, Kim became nervous about making a bad impression. So, he asked his advisor to give him some help. His advisor told him to make a list of possible questions and to practise answering them. Finally, his advisor assured him that he was capable of handling the job. Kim thanked his advisor for his encouragement and agreed to practise answering some possible questions.

As Kim waited in the outer office to meet the interviewer, however, all of this good advice seemed to fly out of the window. Although he had practiced and was used to giving the right answers, during the interview, he could only stutter and stammer.

You can see that a person can be well qualified for a job but fail to get it because he is not accustomed to performing well in a job interview.

Job Hunter

Simon had a cousin called Amy who had to leave school and get a job to support her family. She had loved shopping since she was a little girl, so she decided to look for a job in a department store.

She began her hunt at an office of the Labour Department’s Careers Advisory Service. Here she got two pamphlets.

“Choosing Your Career” told her how to apply for a job and what to do at an interview. “Department Store” described the kinds of jobs available in these stores, the qualifications needed for them, the salaries, working hours and holidays, and training and prospects.

Amy’s next step was to search the newspapers until she found a suitable vacancy and write a letter of application. As a result, she was invited to an interview.

She was delighted but, like most applicants, she got nervous when she thought about the interview. Fortunately, she knew what to do to build up her confidence.

Before she went to the interview, she made two journeys. One was to a branch of the store. While she walked round it, she noted the things it sold, how the staff behaved and they way they dressed. Information about the company that was going to interview her would come in handy later.

After she visited the store, she made a second journey. This was from her home to the exact place of the interview, so she knew how long she would need to get there. At all costs she had to be on time for the interview.

As this day approached, she began to think about possible interview questions and to prepare her answers. “Choosing Your Career” helped her as it contained a list of interview questions. Some were difficult to answer as they made her examine her character, ambitions, strengths and weaknesses. The job advertisement also suggested possible questions. For example, how could she prove that she had “initiative”?

On the day of the interview, since she wanted to make a good first impression on the interviewer, she dressed to look her best. In fact, she chose clothes similar in style to those she had seen the staff in the store wearing. She arrived for the interview about ten minutes early and, when she was called, walked confidently into the interview room. As she entered, she responded pleasantly to the interviewer’s greeting and, after she was invited, sat down ready to begin.

She was still nervous but, at the same time, confident. She was sure that she would do well, because she had prepared for the interview thoroughly.
